OK, so we are now 5 days into the month of September and I've ridden 3 of those 5 days for a total of 31 miles. Not bad, but I have a long ways to go to get to my monthly goal of 240 miles. Looks like its time for a longer ride or two this weekend.
I am happy with my rides so far. Both yesterday and today I got in a nice 12.5 mile ride. Yesterday it took 53:29. This morning I pushed it a bit more and did it in 52:06 with a 14.4 mph pace. I feel really good about that.
One other notable item from this morning is that I've passed the 700 mile mark for 2013. That is a pretty good total, but not nearly what I'm hoping for in 2013.
My journey into cycling, triathlons, exercise, getting healthy and losing weight.

August Challenge Day 14 Ride 14
Feeling pretty good about the August challenge at this point. Its been 14 days and I've ridden every one of them. A couple of items to note regarding this morning's ride and they both have to do with distance. This morning's ride took me over 100 miles for the month, but more importantly it took me to 567 miles for the year which surpassed last year's total of 566 miles.
I'm riding more this year and I'm feeling good. The bike is working well as well.
Today's stats:
10.4 miles
44:21 Elapsed time
Month to date
108.5 miles
8:34:50 elapsed time
How are you doing this month?
Keep those pedals turning!

August Challenge ride 13
Before I talk about this morning's ride I want to wish my eldest grandson Jacob a Happy Birthday!!! Today he turns 11.
Only 3 things to mention about this morning's ride - some wind,a rabbit and some creaking.
This morning there was a southwest wind blowing 12 to 15 mph which meant I was cycling into the wind on the slower parts of my route. It was definitely a bit more work.
On my 4th lap as I was heading north on Quarterhorse, a rabbit almost committed suicide by running across in front of me. He timed it poorly, though and successfully made it across with a couple of feet to spare. I guess he misjudged how fast I was in fact riding.
At about the 9 mile mark this morning, I started to notice a creaking coming from the left pedal and/or bottom bracket area. It seemed to only do it when I was pushing the left pedal so I need to look at it this evening. To avoid possibly damaging anything I took it really easy on the last mile this morning.
Today's stats:
10.4 miles
47:09 elapsed time
Month to date
98.1 miles
7:50:29 elapsed time
A side note, as of yesterday both my mom and dad were still in the challenge having walked and ridden everyday so far in August respectively. I believe my dad was even slightly ahead mileage-wise for the month. I am so proud of them!!!!
Keep those pedals turning.

August Challenge day 6
This morning I'm 6/6 for rides in August. I'm very happy with my progress so far and have to admit there have been a couple of days I wouldn't have ridden but for this challenge.
The thing about this morning's ride is there was very little remarkable about it. no exciting encounters with traffic, no wildlife, no overpowering smells, no real struggles, nothing. It was a good ride which challenged me and helped me to build my fitness.
Here are the stats:
10.4 Miles
46:16 Elapsed Time
And totals for the month to date:
49.6 miles
3:49:14 Elapsed time

August Challenge Day 2
Today is day two of my August Challenge I mentioned here.
I had hoped to get out and ride before it got too hot, but there was a delay. So it was after 11:00, 92 degrees with a 14 mph wind gusting to 22. At least on part of the ride the wind helped to cool me off a bit. I didn't have a plan on where to ride today, so I just picked some roads in the neighborhood and did a couple of meandering loops. In the end I did:
6.6 miles
30:30 elapsed time
Totals for the month:
17 miles
1:16:02 elapsed time
One item to note is that my dad has accepted my challenge and is ridingevery day in August as well. So far his total is 16.3 miles for the month. We'll see who has more miles at the end of the month.

May Ride #12
I had been planning a longer ride this morning and I actually got to execute the plan. I got the bike ready and rolled away at 8:40 or so. There was little wind, bright sunshine and temps in the 70's - a glorious day for a ride.
I headed out Blue Diamond road with a slight tailwind. I was feeling fairly strong and I just spun away. I made it out to the Gypsum mine in 35 minutes. Made it to Bonnie Springs in just under an hour. I continued on to Spring Mountain ranch. It was a hair over 10 miles from my house to here. I stopped and drank some powerade and decided that was far enough for the day.
Truth be told, I was feeling a bit saddle sore and decided it as prudent to head home. I turned and started back down towards home. The effort of riding uphill on the way out was rewarded with the lovely downhill ride on the way home.
I was coasting and floating down the road towards home and it was wonderful.
When I got home I uploaded the data from my Garmin to the various sites including Strava, where I learned I had set a personal best. I hadn't been trying, but having everything working well and not mechanical issues allowed this to happen.

May Ride #9
Got up and got out there for the 4th morning in a row and it felt good. I'm finally getting into a groove. No mechanical issues, no weather issues, just getting out there and putting in a few miles every morning.
This morning it was another 22 laps around the block for a total of 10.48 miles. I even did it faster than yesterday by 37 seconds! That actually gave me an average speed of 14.8 mph! It also got me over the 300 mile mark so far for the year.
As with yesterday's ride, I could have gone farther, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't too late to upload the data and put up my post this morning.
Hope everyone has a great day and is able to get out and enjoy the outdoors in some way!

Wonderful, unremarkable ride
Got on my steed and headed out on Blue Diamond towards Red Rock. Noticed right away how awesome my ride felt. The new tires and wheels gave a smooth and stable ride. The gatorskins had noticeably less rolling resistence.
Funny but it was a great ride primarily because nothing remarkable happened. The winds were in the 10 MPH neighborhood the sun was shining and temps in the low 70's.
The above picture shows the road looking towards Red Rock by Blue Diamond.
Yesterday I did a quick 10 laps around the block as a test to gauge what the 100 Miles Of Nowhere was going to take. The 10 laps netted 4.71 miles which means it will be 212 laps to hit the 100 miles on June 1.
Before that, though I have the Tour De Cure coming up on Saturday. 30 miles with 1960 feet of climbing. It will be a challenge, but I'll do it. Join me in fighting Diabetes by making a donation on my page.
Thank you.

Proud of my wife...
I am so proud of my wife. She got up early this morning and rode a mile with me on her bike. She started strong and was working hard by the end, but she made it! It was amazing having her out there with me. So far I've been basically doing my training by myself. Its been good and I am definitely getting stronger, but to have her along with me was really amazing.
Having someone share the experience definitely makes it easier to do. Its like sharing a burden where you don't have to carry it alone. Never having competed in sports, I never really understood the boost a person can get from the crowd and from their teammates. I can now see why having a personal trainer when working out in the gym is a big deal - they help motivate you and keep you going to in the right direction instead of giving in to your mental limitations.
I just want to say I Love You dear, and I look forward to sharing many more mornings with you in pursuit of our healthier, fitter lives!
